Ask A Way Tutoring provides tutoring services (in person and online) for students (middle school, high school, community college, university), professionals, and beyond.
My name is Dr. Archie Medrano and I LOVE math (math is FUN!)! I have loved math since I was in second grade. I loved math so much that in my senior year in high school, I took AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC at the same time, and then majored in math in college, and went on to graduate school to learn as much math as I could, while specializing in number theory, the Queen of Mathematics!
I earned my bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a minor in computer science) from the University of San Diego (USD) and my doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in mathematics from the University of California San Diego (UCSD). I have been tutoring students since I was in high school, in person and online! I have also tutored professionals studying for the TEAS V and GMAT and professionals taking courses in MATLAB and learning SAS.
I am currently teaching at SCY High School and Art of Problem Solving Academy but I have also taught at San Diego Mesa College, SDSU, UCSD, and USD. When I was in grad school (UCSD), I was a teaching assistant for Math 20D (Introduction to Differential Equations), Math 104 (Number Theory), and Math 110 (Partial Differential Equations) for several quarters.
My approach to tutoring and teaching is the Socratic method, which is the use of open-ended questions to engage a student in discussion and guide him/her towards some kind of insight. This dialectical engagement generates a back and forth, a rapport between the tutor/teacher and the student.
The subjects that I tutor include (but are not limited to the following [please inquire about subjects not listed below]) Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Differential Equations, and Number Theory. I can also tutor in the mathematics/quantitative sections of standardized tests such as SAT, SAT Subject Math (Levels 1 & 2), GRE (Graduate Record Examinations), and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), plus CST (California Standards Tests), AP Calculus AB/BC (Advanced Placement), ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills - for Nursing School), COOP/HSPT/TACHS (Catholic High School Entrance Exams: Cooperative Assessment Exam, High School Placement Test, Test for Admission to Catholic High Schools), SSAT/ISEE (Private and Independent School Admissions: Secondary School Admissions Test, Independent School Entrance Examination), PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), ACT (American College Testing), CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam), GED (General Educational Development Test), ASTB (Aviation Selection Test Battery), ELM (California State University Entry-Level Mathematics Test), CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test), CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers), MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), PCAT (Pharmacy College Admission Test), PRAXIS, and DAT (Dental Admission Test).
When I was an undergrad student, I also tutored a couple of students in a Spanish (grammar) class and they went up 2 letter grades from a D to a B!
From February through March 2022, I tutored a student (with Inattentive Attention Deficit Disorder) in differential equations and he went from failing the class twice to getting a B+/A-!!!
